Hot Crack Sealing
Paving the way for Columbus since 1984
With asphalt pavement, cracks can evolve over time. Cracks form due to a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, earth movement, poor foundation, tree roots, improperly blended asphalt, heavy vehicles, and more. In fact, you may notice more cracking after the freeze/thaw cycle of cold weather that can cause the blacktop to crumble.
And instead of replacing the entire section of your asphalt parking lot or asphalt driveway, a hot crack sealant can be applied by a specialist. Hot crack sealant is a rubberized, commercial-grade product that is melted down into a liquid at a temperature of 300 – 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Once in its liquid form, it is then applied to the crack. By heating it to that temperature, it gives the liquid time to fill deep and strong enough in the crack before cooling. As it cools, it will harden and expand to fill the crack, thus preventing further damage or moisture from entering the crack.
The hot crack sealant can take up to an hour to cool and up to three days for complete curing of the material. During this time, you should wait at least 24 hours before driving or walking on the cracks.
Ideally, cracks should be repaired as soon as possible and at minimum of once a year as part of your regular asphalt parking lot or asphalt driveway maintenance. If you only do it once a year, we suggest doing it going it into the winter months, as long as the weather is dry. In the cold air, the cracks expand, therefore making it easier to fill them.
